Whoopie cakes are delectable treats that consist of a mound of frosting sandwiched between two little round cakes. Traditionally, the cakes are made of chocolate batter with white frosting, but flavours such as carrot cake, pumpkin spice and red velvet have recently become popular as well. Whoopie cakes have been around for a long time, but in the last few years, their popularity has soared. In some places, they are now even more popular than cupcakes.

Part of the reason that whoopie cakes are so popular is that they are portable and easy to store. Unlike cupcakes, whoopie cakes are easy to wrap up and pack in lunch boxes. There is no need to worry about the frosting being smeared and the cake getting smashed. They can also can be refrigerated or frozen for later use, and they retain the original consistency and flavour.

Although their origins are not certain, whoopie cakes are generally thought to have come from either Pennsylvania or Maine. In fact, both states claim that their version is the original. There are actually two different regions in Pennsylvania that are known for their cakes. In Lancaster County, the Amish are credited with inventing the confections from leftover cake batter. Legend has it that whoopie cakes got their name after a local farmer shouted “Whoopie!” when he found one in his lunch box. In the Pittsburgh and Johnstown areas, the cakes are called gobs.

In Maine, whoopie cakes are so popular that they were recently named the official state treat. This act sparked some good-natured protests from die-hard whoopie cake fans in Pennsylvania. The main difference between the two states’ recipes is the filling. The Pennsylvania version uses buttercream icing that has historically been made with shortening. In Maine, marshmallow cream is added to the icing, and the result is a sweeter, creamier filling.
